With Ubuntu 18.04 recently released, I wanted to install Chrome Remote Desktop on it to remotely access my desktop. Over the years, I keep trying to install Chrome Remote Desktop but end up. The black screen can also come because you are missing the wrong packages for your desktop environment. If you install xrdp on an Ubuntu Server edition (I did on 20.04) you get the black screen because you are missing the ubuntu-desktop-minimal package. By default ubuntu wants to start a Gnome session.

Set up Ubuntu for xrdp

First step is to install Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) server xrdp
onto the Ubuntu Desktop.
Then we need to enable xrdp
to start after reboot in order to run the remote desktop sharing server.
Finally, we need to open port 3389 in the firewall for incoming traffic
Use Windows Remote Desktop Client
Find the IP Address of your Ubuntu Desktop on your Local Area Network (LAN), and recall the username and password you used when creating your Ubuntu Desktop.
Use Case
For my home server, I recently setup a home server using UnRaid. I have a Ubuntu 20.04 virtual machine that I can access using this method.

I enjoy gaming on a Windows laptop, and this method gives me a method to have a near native Ubuntu 20.04 desktop experience on my LAN, with the convenience of remote virtual machines.
