On Thursday, April 8, 2021 at the West Islip Senior Center,
New York State Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced three proposed bills to combat the high cost of Prescription Drugs.
Joseph Delgado, CEO of Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO) shared the major impact this has on people with disabilities, so many are unable to afford their medications causing people to go without – placing so many lives at risk because we have to meet other financial needs.
Mr. Delgado also went onto say how this package of legislation will assist and provide people with disabilities the means to remain independent in the community!
1 in 4 Americans cannot afford their medicine, prescription drug prices continue to increase significantly in cost. 3 in 10 adults say they have not taken their medication in the past 12 months due to cost.
The Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2021
• This bill would allow the Secretary of Health & Human Services to negotiate lower prices with drug manufactures that participate in Medicare Part D.
The Prescription Drug Price Relief Act of 2021
• This bill would require the Secretary of Health & Human Services to make sure American’s do not pay more for prescription drugs than the median price of the following five countries: Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, & Japan.
The Affordable & Safe Prescription Drug Importation Act.
• This bill would instruct the Secretary of Health & Human Services to issue regulations allowing wholesalers, licensed U.S. pharmacies, & individuals to import qualifying prescription drugs manufactured at FDA-inspected facilities from licensed Canadian sellers.
